World of Warcraft: Cataclysm announced at Blizzcon 2009. First official details and trailer Posted: 22 Aug 2009 01:09 AM PDT
For instance, Wetlands has been destroyed and The Barrens cleaved in two. I wonder how this may affect Barrens chat . . . While we’re talking about geography though, another pretty huge change will be the ability to use flying mounts around Azeroth. It’d definitely be a must considering the new layout ripe with lava canyons and other not so level terrain. Here is a comparison video showing locations before and after the Cataclysm. There really are a lot of big announcements outlined in the trailer, and probably two of the biggest for most are the addition of two new races: Goblins (for the Horde!) and Worgen (for the Alliance!).
Worgen on the other hand will be be able to take on all classes except Paladin and Shaman. Their racial ability is called Darkflight, which temporarily increases movement speed by 70% (3 minute cooldown). Nice for times you may need to make a quick getaway. There are also some changes in tow for the veteran races, namely new race/class combos including: New Horde Combinations New Alliance Combinations Some may scoff at these changes (Dwarf Shaman?), and I have to admit, it feels a little weird seeing things become more equalized. Also, a bit sad that my secret wish for a Tauren Rogue will never be realized… wah. The expansion doesn’t end there! There will also be a new secondary profession, Archaeology, which will join the old standbys first aid, fishing, and cooking. You will be able to scavenge the newly revealed crusts and altered terrain for artifacts and rewards. Also, for the “Achievement-happy” folk out there, in addition to your character continuing to be able to earn achievements, now your guild as a whole can earn Guild Levels and collective Guild Achievements. Incentive for good teamwork, eh? Here is the debut trailer for WoW: Cataclysm. Cataclysm will of course have the obligatory level cap raise, except instead of bumping 10 levels as in previous expansions, there will be a 5 level increase for a maximum of 85. This isn’t too surprising considering Blizzard wants to make the experience more about raids, PvP battlegrounds, and end-game content rather than the level grind, as evidenced by the vast changes they have already been making to quicken the leveling process. In that vein, look forward to Heroic versions of classic beginning instances like Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep, as well as uncovered and revamped high-level zones and even more high-level raid content. Lots to look forward to and wait for, but it’s just cracking the surface before we get to learn and delve in to more details from the crew at Blizzard. There is no release date as of yet, and considering WotLK was released over a year after it’s announcement at Blizzcon ‘07, we probably have a ways to wait. Nevertheless, I, and other fans I’m sure are feeling the itch to gear up for what’s coming. — I’d like to thank my best friend Lunarskye for writing this excellent article. Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier release date is November 18, 2009 Posted: 21 Aug 2009 04:54 PM PDT
Developed by High Impact Games (working closely with Naughty Dog), the game brings hero Jak and his mischievous sidekick Daxter back together once again. Prepare for non-stop action and adventure as the duo travel across mysterious lands and take to the sky on a mission to save their planet from destruction. Picking up from where the original Jak and Daxter trilogy left off, Jak and furry friend Daxter team up with their friend Kiera on her quest to become a Sage and save their world from the threat of darkness. As the environment of their planet slowly dies, our two worldly heroes embark on a mission to protect their world from the threat of “dark eco”. Beginning on foot, you’ll run and jump across undiscovered lands, before taking flight in one of five different aircrafts. With cheeky Daxter and our serious Hero Jak together on the adventure, fun and laugher is never far away. Blast airborne enemies and battle sky pirates with your powerful Gunstaff – a brand-new weapon that can transform into other new weapons. Here is the new GamesCom 2009 trailer for the game. |

World of Warcraft: The Magazine releasing in November thanks to Future Publishing Posted: 21 Aug 2009 12:16 PM PDT
A joint collaboration between Future Publishing (who owns Nintendo Power, Official Xbox Magazine, Official PlayStation Magazine and Maximum PC) and Blizzard, the magazine will launch this November for $40 (one year) or $70 (two years). And that’s apparently the price for existing WoW subscribers. The mag will have a number of high profile writers enlisted, including Julian Rignall (Virgin) as executive director, Ryan Vulk (Wired) as art director, and Dan Amrich (Official Xbox Magazine senior editor). “We’re bringing together an international team of player-writer experts to create in-depth articles about World of Warcraft’s design, art, lore, and community, as well as all aspects of its gameplay,” Rignall said. As stated above, the 148-page introductory issue will be out this November, “in time for the fifth anniversary of World of Warcraft” and will be available in English, German, Spanish and French and will be released quarterly. The upcoming publication will be sold through the game’s account management page, and the official World of Warcraft magazine web-site. |

There were plenty of reactions to Sony’s Press Conference, and the 1UP guys along with dudes from G4 discuss them in the following video. * Image via Techtree |

The video will blow you away by really showing where developers are trying to take the game in terms of storytelling. They are really putting a lot of humanity into the game with emotions that will pull on your heartstrings and stories that will touch upon the various feelings of people. Not to mention the graphics are quite stunning. Ethan Mars is a depressed father who recently lost his beloved son in a tragic accident. See how it all unfolds in this new trailer. Heavy Rain is scheduled for release exclusively for PS3 in early 2010. |

PS3 backwards compatibility with PS2 games not in the future Posted: 21 Aug 2009 10:36 AM PDT
Sony’s John Koller has outright stated that PS2 backwards compatability is not a part of the new redesigned PS3 Slim and never will be a part of the future of the PS3. To quote: So your only choice when it comes to playing PS2 games is to: 1. Keep your old PS2, 2. Buy a new PS2, or 3. Find one of those elusive PS3’s that includes the Emotion Engine and thus is backwards compatible and plays PS2 games. Which you can buy on ebay for $300+. Better get one fast though, eventually they’ll be pretty rare. But if you don’t mind keeping that ancient PS2 hooked up, then there’s no need to worry. And you can pick up a PS2 for $100 new, about $50 used/refurbished. Via 1UP, Image via wallpaperbase |

Blur racing game release date is November 3rd, 2009 Posted: 21 Aug 2009 08:31 AM PDT
This was announced at a post-earnings conference call by publisher Activision Blizzard. This is the first game from Bizarre Creations since they were bought out by Activision way back in September of 2007. Blur is an arcade-style racing game with a party focus (ala Mario Kart) but takes that in a more realistic direction than is generally seen by arcade-style racers. It features 50 licensed cars and real-world locatiosn from Barcelona, Spain to San Francisco, California in the good ol’ US of A. And like any good action racing game, the title will include numerous power-ups that players can acquire during the course of a race in order to obliterate their opponents. Power-Ups include: Shock, Barge (wave of energy knocks cars away), Shunt (lurches the opposing car forwards, flipping it over), Nitro, Mines and Repair. Additionally, up to three slots of power-ups can be stored and they can be mixed or matched for over 300 combinations! In the single player career mode, players follow e-mail messages from various social networking posts (and parodies on popular web-sites like youtube, with Blur’s “Inner Tube”) to find races. Depending on your character, you will race against or as part of various teams. Teams have their own racing style, power-up matches, match types, locales and cars, as well as their own fictional servers/social networking web-sites. Like in Project Gotham Racing, players can earn “Fan Points” (Blur’s version of “Kudos”) by performing stunts, using power-ups effectively, and beating the other racers. As you build up your fan-base you will progress in the career mode. The game can also be played online in multiplayer with up to 20 people (as well as 20 cars on-screen at a time, both offline & on), as well as offline in four-player split-screen mode. The online mode is enhanced through a “social-networking”-style set-up, where players create an account and join the fictional servers from the single-player game. Bizarre Creations has dubbed this the “Facebook of racing”. In multiplayer races you can fully customize the match, including number of laps, assists, power-ups, teams, etc. You can then share this and other information with friends over the social network. Here is a behind-the-scenes video of this absolutely beautiful awesome looking racing game. And this is coming from someone who is not a fan of racers. |
